November: Emergency Preparedness

Objective: Respond effectively to emergencies.

Discussion Points:

- Walk through site-specific evacuation plans and identify safe assembly points.

- Review basic first aid techniques, including treating cuts, burns, and sprains.

Basic First Aid Techniques

  1. For Cuts and Scrapes:

    • Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth to stop bleeding.

    • Rinse the wound with clean water.

    • Cover with a sterile bandage to prevent infection.

  2. For Burns:

    • Cool the area immediately under running water for 10–15 minutes.

    • Cover with a loose, sterile dressing—never use ointments or ice.

  3. For Sprains or Strains:

    • Follow the R.I.C.E method: Rest, Ice (20 minutes on/off), Compression (with a bandage), and Elevation.

  4. For Heat Exhaustion:

    • Move to a cool place, loosen clothing, and sip water slowly.

    • Apply a cool, wet cloth to the skin to help lower body temperature.

  5. For Chemical Exposure to Skin:

    • Flush the area with clean water for at least 15 minutes.

    • Remove any contaminated clothing and seek medical attention if irritation persists.

  6. For Choking (Heimlich Maneuver):

    • For Adults: Stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waist, and make a fist with one hand. Place your fist just above their belly button, grasp it with your other hand, and deliver quick, upward thrusts until the object is expelled.

    • For Yourself: Lean over a sturdy object (like a chair back) and press your abdomen against it with quick, upward thrusts.

-Contact emergency services and share updated emergency contact lists.

Activity: Practice CPR on a training dummy or review first aid basics as a team.
